Preserving Habitat

The history of the Rocky River Important Bird Area breeding bird survey from 2006-2011 is a story of volunteerism, commitment, and outstanding leadership. It serves as a model for how to conceive, plan, and conduct a project to preserve an IBA. Most noteworthy about this project is the outcome of our efforts. It provides Cleveland Metroparks with data on bird populations in the Rocky River (East Branch) from North Royalton to Hinckley). Cleveland Metroparks uses our data on an on-going basis to seek funding to purchase private property along the East Branch. Their vision is to create contiguous parkland around Greater Cleveland. The Dike 14/Doan Brook Important Bird Area survey is also the result of collaboration among several entities. In 2014, Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society and Kirtland Bird Club (KBC) partnered to plan and conduct year-round bird surveys on Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority gave these organizations permission to conduct the surveys. This project is an example of a low-cost, high-result project that again serves as a model protecting an IBA.
