Youth Scholarship

Our flagship activities have always been monthly programs and field trips for the public. Monthly field trips create opportunities for people to connect with birds, wildlife, and habitat. All our programs help people and communities learn why it's so important to protect our natural sanctuaries.

Our Rocky River IBA survey drew the participation of 100 people through a variety of volunteer opportunities. And about 25 people are participating in our year-round bird surveys at Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve. For the latest Preserve updates read the story, Bird Surveys at Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve (CLNP – also known as Dike 14).

Learn more about another Chapter initiative, the Walton School Project, promoting bird-friendly communities in the articles, The Cleveland Zoo and Western Cuyahoga Audubon Connect Schools, Youth and Families with Nature" and the program summary, Walton School Courtyard Beautification Program Spring 2016.
"I really enjoyed being part of your group’s volunteer program with the school. A particular student participated who really struggled with behavior issues, and I felt that he and I were never able to connect. He spent the whole time planting and mulching with me, and I saw a side of him that I had never seen. He was calm, inquisitive… and genuinely joyful. Just thought I would share because I’ve thought about him and that experience a lot this summer. I hope your group continues to find ways to work with kids and expose them to new experiences!" ~ Erica Thomas
Wraparound Site Coordinator, Walton School and Center for Excellence & Innovation in Education, Cleveland State University

At the finish, everyone celebrated with pizza. Chapter educational programs mentor collaborative youth leadership and bird-friendly habitat practices.

Academic Scholarship

Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society contributes special awards at the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF), held March 14-17, 2016 at Cleveland State University.

NEOSEF is open to students in grades 7-12 in a seven-county area. In 2015, more than 600 students took part. The NEOSEF grand prize winners will go on the International Science and Engineering Fair.  Western Cuyahoga Audubon makes special awards by judges Michelle Manzo and Penny O'Connor.

Established in 1953, the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, whose goal is to get young adults interested in science and engineering by participating in a science and engineering competition. The Fair has been held every year since 1954 and is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

NOSEF is sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland State University, and the Great Lakes Science Center.
