September Program: “Reflecting on Challenges and Solutions for Preventing Bird-Window Collisions in Residential Landscaping” Presenter: Lucy McKernan, environmentalist and concerned citizen Date & Time: Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Location: Fairview Park Branch Library Description: Great programs like Lights Out and FLAP have addressed bird-window collisions/deaths in concentrated metropolises. But the number of bird deaths in the U.S. hold steady, around one billion annually. Roughly half of avian mortality caused by window collisions occur on residential properties. This program provides the latest data from top bird conservationists, including why populations cannot rebound from this threat; addresses the challenges of retrofitting windows and other reflective building materials on homes spread out across the land; and offers novel, practical and cheap DIY solutions for us all. October Program: “The Bird Within” Presenter: Tom Baldwin, award winning bird carver and carving instructor Date & Time: Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Location: Fairview Park Branch Library Description: Tom Baldwin will introduce you to the world of bird carving. Somewhere in a block of wood is a beautiful bird carving. You will be given an inside look at how this is done. If you ever wondered what is involved in carving birds, this presentation will end the mystery. Tom will also share how he became enamored with this art form.
