FALL WARBLER CHALLENGE 2020
A Fundraiser for WCAS, September 1-October 31, 2020

We love to observe the Wood Warblers in the spring. Birds are in their flashy, breeding plumage and they tend to concentrate in areas. Forget spring (for now) and look forward to fall and the warblers that pass through at this time of year. “Ugh, those confusing fall warblers” … nope, not really. Many warblers, especially the males, have similar patterns to their spring plumage. Yes, females and young of the year can be a bit tougher and there are some species that appear quite different in the fall, but not many. This is when YOU become a better birder. Through the fall songbird migration, September 1 through October 31, 2020 Western Cuyahoga Audubon challenged birders to see and list as many fall warblers as possible. Explore the archives below.

WCAS FALL WARBLER CHALLENGE 2020: Fall Warbler Identification Evening
Event: Fall Warbler Identification
Presenter: Ryan Jacob, Staff Ornithologist, Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO)

Description: With Western Cuyahoga Audubon’s Fall Warbler Challenge taking place during the months of September and October, WCAS hosts a fall warbler identification program to help with some of those more “confusing” fall warblers. Ryan Jacob, ornithologist, naturalist and bird-bander with Black Swamp Bird Observatory, discusses field marks and features to look for on fall warblers. The information presented is useful for newer birders as well as seasoned birders, and an extensive number of species are covered. Ryan Jacob is a native to northwest Ohio who discovered his passion for birds while working as a naturalist for the state park system. This passion quickly evolved into a focus on research and education. Ryan currently works with Black Swamp Bird Observatory as one of their primary bird banders, with an unabashed bias for warblers. With years of experience in the field and a penchant for teaching, Ryan is also a certified bird banding trainer through the North American Banding Council.
