‘TALE OF A LAKE’ at #CIFF41
‘TALE OF A LAKE’ focuses on the miraculous ability of thousands of Finnish freshwater lakes and rivers to renew and restore vital ecosystems. The film tells the story of ancient mythological animal symbols, and engulfs us in fantastic cinematography of pristine forests. We are captivated by the industrious work of lake animals - such as the beaver - up-close and personal, and entranced by the lush symphonic score of composer Panu Aaltio, awarded twice BEST ORIGINAL SCORE FOR A DOCUMENTARY from the International Film Music Critics Association, first in 2013 for the nature documentary Tale of a Forest, and in 2017 for the follow-up Tale of a Lake, for which he is also nominated for a Jussi Award. Watch the trailer here.
‘LAKE ERIE LEGENDS’ at #WCAS
In honor of the film, ‘TALE OF A LAKE’, Western Cuyahoga Audubon has created ‘LAKE ERIE LEGENDS’, a 12-part mini-series that offers a bird’s-eye view into the lives of citizen scientists, ecologists, artists, and municipal and government officials dedicated to Lake Erie environmental conservation. ‘LAKE ERIE LEGENDS’ is about how Lake Erie has been altered by humans and similar to the water spirits that took care of the water folk in ‘TALE OF A LAKE’, this story collection explores how those living along Lake Erie are the water stewards and care takers of the Lake. Native American Indian legends, traditional music, and photography of Lake Erie’s iconic shoreline, waterways, landscapes and animals combine to complete the story of today’s Great Lake Erie.
'WATER SPIRITS' Scenic Slide Artwork
“Scenic Slides”, hand-painted, fired glass, iconic Lake Erie landscapes framed as a free-standing tabletop decorative artwork. A limited edition of six commissioned artworks celebrating the 'WATER SPIRITS' campaign to promote the movie, 'TALE OF A LAKE' and raise donation dollars for local conservation education. Meet Stained Glass artist Bruce Buchanan here.
CAMPAIGN GOALS
Our campaign goal is to sell movie tickets to ‘TALE OF A LAKE’ and Western Cuyahoga Audubon ‘WATER SPIRITS’ donation tickets to grow membership and support for conservation education programs. Our intention is to raise public awareness for regional and global organizations who steward species conservation and strive to protect Lake Erie and all freshwater ecosystems around the world.
CONTRIBUTORS AND COLLABORATORS
The stories behind ‘TALE OF A LAKE’ are whimsical and delightful. The movie teaches us about the magical power of fresh water systems, the animals that depend on the lakes for life, and how every creature plays a part in restoration and renewal of this life-giving force. Western Cuyahoga Audubon's ‘WATER SPIRITS’ shares different but connected stories about our freshwater Great Lake Erie: the thousands of Finland Lakes and the southern Ohio shores of Lake Erie are home to freshwater ecosystems and the land, water, wildlife, fish, birds, and plants. Ohio does not have ancient mythological figures but we have included Indigenous American Indian cultural fables and music. Modern day Lake Erie naturalists share perspectives on Lake Erie change and their efforts to preserve and protect these delicate but resilient ecosystems. Artist Bruce Buchanan creates a limited edition of stained glass decorative objects inspired by Lake Erie's waterways and iconic landscapes.
