Bluebird Nest Boxes: Spring 2022 Update
by Kurt Miske
After a successful 2021 debut, the Lewis Road Riding Ring Bluebird Trail is ready for the 2022 nesting season. We began monitoring again in March, after cleaning out the boxes from over-wintering.
We got off to a slow start, with several boxes attracting the enemy, House Sparrows (HOSPs). Boxes 3, 4 and 5 seem particularly prone to the non-native birds, and we performed several evictions. Box 5 is still being claimed by a male, but it takes 2 to tango!
As of May 24, however, we have tree swallow nesters in Box 2 and Box 4! Tree swallows, of course, are native cavity nesters and are welcome in our nest boxes. Sparrow-spookers, which sit atop the box and display Mylar streamers and discourage HOSPs but not the nesters, have been installed on these boxes. Sparrow-spookers were effective last year, so hopefully they will work again this season.
We will continue to monitor all boxes at least once if not twice per week.
