MORNING EVENT
Event: Urban Bird Walk in the Flats-Cleveland’s Rust Belt!
Day & Time: Sunday, November 3, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Location: We will meet at the parking lot of Merwin's Wharf, 1785 Merwin Ave, Cleveland, OH 44113 Map This will allow for people to carpool. We can scan the river there and along the Wharf before heading to Scranton Flats. We can bird the Wharf again when we return.
Tickets: The public is welcome. Free Ticket registration is appreciated.
Leaders: Tim Colborn, Liz McQuaid, and Guest, David Lindo
Targeted Species: Good conditions permitting, we'll see Black-crowned Night Herons, a wide variety of Ducks, Peregrine Falcons, Gulls, Northern Mockingbirds, with luck, Bald Eagles. There will be a variety of spotting scopes to share.
Description: Downtown Cleveland offers several options for birders seeking avian bounty. The lakefront, the cemeteries, and the city parks all provide opportunities to find birds (both resident and migrant). Among these, birding along the Cuyahoga River within the city can be rewarding. Two primary areas of access along the river are within the city district known as the Flats. Both Rivergate Park (behind Merwin’s Wharf) and Scranton Flats are best known for their winter birding riches but we’ll venture forth to see what fall might provide.
The area along Scranton Road known as the Scranton Flats includes a sort of peninsula that is the center of an 11 acre riverfront restoration project. Prior to construction, this area was polluted and overgrown with invasive plants, shrubs and trees – reminders of its industrial era heritage. Despite this scourge, the area had beautiful views of the river winding through downtown. The reconstruction added native plants to attract wildlife and natural riverbanks with the intent of harboring fish. This area features public fishing access, a river observation deck, and fish habitat breeding areas.
Rivergate Park is jointly owned by the Cleveland Rowing Foundation (CRF), Cleveland Metroparks and the City of Cleveland, working together and with surrounding partners to create a diverse recreational campus and green space in the Flats. CRF owns and operates the boathouse from which rowing programs operate. Cleveland Metroparks owns and operates Merwin’s Wharf Bistro and has developed a Green Corridor and an all-purpose trail along the river, and the City of Cleveland funded the construction of an urban skatepark. Nearby, the Ohio City Bike Co-op provides new and rental bikes for use on the growing network of trails passing by Rivergate. The Park reclaimed almost 7 acres of vacant, industrialized land, transforming it into an urban waterfront park with rowing, kayaking, and canoeing. Rivergate is adjacent to the future connection to the Towpath Trail.

"Conservation work rightly focuses on the ecological details. The abundance and distribution of plant and animal species, the sinuosity of streams, the diversity of wetlands, the extent of the tree canopy – conservation saves all of it. The reality, though, is that conservation saves people. Given enough time, the earth would heal itself from our misdeeds, but we need nature now and will need abundant access to it in the future." ~ Robert Koonce, Chief Development Officer, Boy & Girls Clubs of Cleveland. West Creek Conservancy recently completed the Morgana Bluffs Project which helped preserve a high quality wetland in Cleveland’s Slavic Village.
