A Lakefront tour of Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve, West 55th Street Pier, Burke Lakefront Airport, Wendy Park, and Edgewater State Park.
Our first stop was Wendy Park along the lakeshore just west of downtown Cleveland. While the shorebird migration is in its early stages, we found Least and Pectoral Sandpipers, Killdeer and Semipalmated Plovers, Lesser Yellowlegs and about ten beautifully buffy orange Short-billed Dowitchers feeding at the iron ore ponds just west of the main Wendy Park parking lot.
Great Black-backed Gulls bobbed in the river with a few Double-crested Cormorants and Red-breasted and Common Mergansers. Hundreds of Red-breasted Mergansers flew west in flocks low over Lake Erie. As at Edgewater, gulls exploded into the air when a Bald Eagle cruised through.
We will meet at Edgewater Park in Cleveland, lower beach area by the fishing pier. As road conditions permit we will bird Edgewater and proceed to Wendy Park. Looking for a variety of gull species!
