Highlights were numerous with nice looks at a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers. We had three Brown Creepers. There were at least eight Carolina Wrens, calling and crawling in the brush. Two Barred Owls were seen in two different locations. The best highlight for the day and for the year was a Red-tailed Hawk. - Report by Bill Deininger.

Description: The December 2021, 2nd Saturday bird walk started at 9:00 am with temperatures a spring-like 60 degrees. The walk ended with the same 60 degree temperature, an unusually warm December walk. We had a mix of clouds, sun and a little light rain. We tallied 26 species. The expected suspects were found on the three hour and 20 minute walk. The Red-tailed Hawk was perched on a tree branch and as the group approached, the Hawk dove on the ground. The Hawk then flew onto a log on the ground and it had a Vole in its talon. It looked around, then proceeded to fly directly at the group with the Vole hanging from its beak. It landed very close to the group, on an unobstructed branch, and proceeded to consume the Vole. We all had incredible, unobstructed, long looks at the Hawk. - Report by Bill Deininger.
