Since this event takes place in the evening, be prepared to do more listening than seeing as the sun sets quickly.
The courtship of the American Woodcock is a wonderful sign of spring. At dusk, a male woodcock will find an open field, begin calling from the courting ground, then take off into the sky with whistling calls, then drop back down to the ground… all to impress the females. Since this event takes place in the evening, be prepared to do more listening than seeing as the sun sets quickly. Some evenings the birds may be more cooperative and active than other evenings, there is no way to tell how good each evening will be.
